Networking

Convenience: With breakthroughs in wireless security, it is now possible to safely connect all of your computers to a $49 router; now is the time to improve. With a simple peer to peer network, you can share files, printers, internet connections, and more. No expensive software to buy, it's built right into Windows. Peer to peer networks are as easy as reading another drive. Click on "MyComputer" and a shared drive shows up as an "E", or you can share individual folders.
Speed: Most network devices are running at 10/100 Mgps. Considering that a 56k modem, or an entry level 756k, or 3 meg DSL connection, on up to 5 or 6 Meg cable modem fit easily within this standard. Even the new fiber optic speeds with Verizon DSL running at 15 or 30MBps, they are still running easily within the 10/100 standard.
Performance: Now with Gigabit 10/100/1000 switches and adapter cards, running on wired networks, providing speeds that are 10 to 100 times the 10/100 standard, using a network for data intensive applications, or for backing up data is more desirable than ever.

Wireless

Wireless networking has 2 main advantages. One is that their is no need to run wires through the walls, and the other is that it affords you portablity within the range of the wireless receiver. Because these advantages were so beneficial, most people ignored the fact that wireless connections were not secure. For that reason, most businesses chose to incur the expense of hard wiring their networks. Now advanced wireless security with 128bit WEP encryption, MAC, or address filtering, has provided a secure connection, at a very low cost. For only $49 a secure Linksys wireless router can be purchased, and if your laptop already has a wireless receiver built into it, that is all you need. No special software to buy, it is already built into Windows XP. Considering the fastest internet speeds are topping 30Mbps a wireless router running at 54Mbps can handle that easily. These new wireless G (802.11G) routers run at 54Mbps while still maintaining interoperability with the older 802.11B clients at 11Mbps. The wireless Linksys router WRT54G, or the WRT54GS with speed booster that I am recommending is really 3 devices in one. In addition to a wireless access point, it also contains a 4 port wired switch, at the faster 10/100 Mbps speed. Finally it serves as a router that ties together and allows you to share a high speed braodband DSL or cable modem connection.

Power Users

First let me say that when dealing with quality devices, I am not into yey this and boo that. I am into yey this, and yey that. Each has it's own strength and purpose. A wireless router provides the advantages of portablity, and avoids having to drill holes in walls to run wires. With that advantage comes a price you pay for speed, and performance. Although it outperforms even the fastest internet connections, for other operations, such as transferring data across the network, you can't compare 54Mbps to 1000. For those who wish to have the ultimate in performance, they need to go with a hard wired network. Even the difference between a 54Mbps wireless connection, as compared to a 10/100 wired built in switch connection, that comes standard with the wireless router, you can see a noticeable performance difference. So imagine what a Gig, or 2 Gig connection can do for you.
So the ultimate setup is to have both. If you have multiple devices in a network, that need to be hooked up, my advise is to purchase an inexpensive switch to run at the Gig standard, then run your internet connection off of the secure wireless router. The switch is a passive internal connection, so the computers for example in the network, with Gigabit network PCI adapter cards, can enjoy blazing interconnectivity speeds. That is a serious performance difference when backing up data across a network for a bsiness or home with multiple PC's, with an automated backup strategy in play. More about that in the backup page.
